Encounter Beneath The Oak

Image
I make daily obeisance and peanut offerings to the weresquirrel living in an oak tree in our front yard.  It appears to considers me as any numinous incarnation from the rodent todash space might: with feigned indifference that melts to exaggerated jubilation, perhaps so that it might convince me to lower my defenses and inadvertently provide an opening through the thinny.  I hear the limnal kammen sounding. I hear it.  This furry son of Maerlyn and I had such an encounter just now. "Ah," I heard its wee dereistic voice say in my head, "So we meet again, and so again you bear the goober Arachis. Eftsoons shall it be again, and again. So it must be and so it must always be."  And yet I know it speaks falsely. How could it be otherwise?  I know it waits for me there, waits for me behind the tree I planted with my own hands, waiting for the world to move on, waiting for the beam to break at last. The ancient beast waits, and plots, and munches. — J.F. "Jeff" ...

Silliness: Tongue Awareness

Image
I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone about the tongue, which is prehensile muscular organ that most of us have in our mouths. It includes four muscles that are attached to bones and four quite strong muscles that are only attached to the organ itself. Those muscles are supplied by massive blood vessels that you can easily see if you look underneath. Your tongue grows right out of the floor your mouth, it is covered with little nipple-like structures, it is soaked in spit, and it is THERE ALL THE TIME even when you're eating or speaking or singing or sleeping. It's pretty much right there in the way of everything 24/7. Chances are pretty good that you are either moving or clenching your tongue in your mouth right now as you read this sentence. Okay, that's all for now so you can go back to whatever it was you were doing. Thanks for coming to my tongue talk.   — J.F. "Jeff" McCullers

Silliness: When The Words Get Slippery

Image
18. Protense: I've read Kant over and again, and I know there's good stuff in there, but holy crap, that's a lot of work for just a few words to handle. Something something dynamical antinomies. I'm reading and things are getting good and then I realize I need to put another hour into that last sentence and then I start wondering what's happening on Twitter and the thing is that I don't even like Twitter because it's almost as bad for ya as Facebook.   Contra, viz : Coffee and oranges, again. The sunlight on our skin. When the morning stars sang together.   18.b. Parenthetical note: (We are stardust, we are golden, we are caught in the devil's bargain, and we've got to get ourselves back to the Garden.)   18.e. Parenthetical note: (Halting problem. Cherubim barring the eastern gate, the flaming sword turning every which way.)   20. Contense: This self-referential post is a non-fungible token on which you are [virtually] invited to bid.   Contra, in l...

Still Life WIth Oranges

Image
May I offer you an orange in this trying time? These oranges were painted by Piet Mondrian in Amsterdam in 1899. Oranges are a hybrid of the sturdy pomelo and the vivacious mandarin. 1899 was the same year that The Hague Convention was signed, which forbade the use of poisons, the killing of enemy combatants who have surrendered, looting of a town or place, and the attack or bombardment of undefended towns or habitations. You'll be annoying if you insist at parties that oranges are a kind of berry but you won't be wrong. 1899 was the same year that Scott Joplin wrote "The Maple Leaf Rag." Bergamot oranges are used to make Earl Grey tea so it seems likely that Captain Picard loves their zesty flavor. 1899 was the same year that the Zeppelin was launched, that the newsies went on strike, that modern geometry was developed, and the U.S. acquired Cuba from Spain. One of the things made the Palace of Versailles so exceptional was its dazzling orangerie, which is how you s...

The Poetry Of Sub Delivery

Image
Wednesday night in our house means (a) I take a poetry class on Zoom and (b) since I’m not cooking dinner, we order Subway. This has become our way of life at least for the semester but I might be pushing my luck tonight. – J.F. "Jeff" McCullers

Silliness: Context-Free Image With Unrelated Text

Image
Although conjectures have been formulated about the proportions of primes in higher-degree polynomials, they remain unproven, and it is unknown whether there exists a quadratic polynomial that (for integer arrguments) is prime infinitely often. Image source Text Source
